St. Clare's Hospital site in Schenectady to become multipurpose space

New developments are in the works for the former St. Clare’s Hospital on Mclellan St. in Schenectady.

A sale is in the works with current owners Ellis Medicine current owners to redevelop the old hospital into a multipurpose space which is expected to be finalized this fall.

Jeff Buell and Schenectady Hardware and Electric president Chris Spraragen are set to purchase the property from Elis Medicine this fall.

"It's in the early stages of planning, we know that it'll be several hundred apartments, and we know we're going to have enhanced entrances into the park,” said investor Jeff Buell.

The 18-acre property will be mixed-use residential and commercial space, with a roughly 50 million dollar investment into the project.

The property is operated by Ellis Medicine, in June the healthcare center announced the closure of their nursing home on the Mclellan St. campus.

The closure is connected to the project and has been in conversation for several years.

The mission of the project, create a more walkable area and access to Central Park.

"Right now, that campus is a disconnect between one side and another because it's on a hill and there's no reason to go there unless you're going to the hospital. When you have a space where you can only go for one specific reason you don't get other people,” said Buell. “By creating new engaged paths in the park and back out to the grocery store you're inviting walkability."

Spraragen added, "There's been a lot of investments by the mayor's office and the city council to make Central Park such a jewel of the city- it's always been very nice but between the new pool, the new tennis court; Music Haven is a great amenity right next door to the site so we're hoping we can have people use it even more because it's a great experience to have in your backyard."

Both men say it's more than a business venture, but investing in their community as Spraragen's mom was a nurse at the hospital and Buell was born there.

Buell is a co-owner of Redburn Developments and says the company is not involved in the St. Clare's project.
